CARPET SPOTTING GUIDE

Your spot removal kit should contain:
  • Dry cleaning fluid (non-flammable, such as perchloroethylene).
  • Detergent solution (mix one teaspoon of a neutral powder type of detergent in one half pint of water).
  • Acid solution (mix one third cup of white vinegar with two thirds cup of water).
  • Alkaline solution (one tablespoon ammonia to ¾ cup cold water).
  • Put aside clean white absorbent cloths, a sponge and an eyedropper.
 
Now you are ready for any accidental spill.
  • Determine WHAT was spilled.
  • Check the chart to find out whether to use dry cleaner OR detergent cleaner.
 
THEN:
  • Scrape or spoon up excess materials.
  • Blot up spill with clean white absorbent cloth.
  • Place a SMALL AMOUNT of cleaning solution, selected from the STAIN REMOVAL CHART, on clean white absorbent cloth. BLOT UP excess material. DONOT RUB. DONOT BRUSH.
  • a. Repeat step 3 until no further progress is made. It is best to work from the outer edge towards the center of the stain. Be patient as some stains take a while to come out.
  • After thorough blotting, place one half inch of clean white absorbent material over the damp area. Then add weight to ensure firm contact to the material. ALLOW six hours for drying.

Dissolve these water soluble spills in DETERGENT SOLUTION
  • Alcohol
  • Bee (V)
  • Bleach (V)
  • * Blood
  • * Chocolates
  • Carbon Black
  • Coffee
  • * Crepe paper
  • Egg
  • Food color
  • Fruit juice
  • Gelatin
  • Glue
  • * Grass
  • * Gravy
  • Ice cream
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Permanent ink
  • Soft drinks
  • Soot
  • Syrup
  • Tea
  • Urine (V)
  • Vomit
  • Water colors (A)
  • Wine (V)
 
  • *”These are the combination materials and may need both dry cleaner and detergent to dissolve all the ingredients.
  • Apply the solution recommended for the group it belongs to and repeat until there is no effect.
  • Then apply the other solution and repeat until the stain is removed.
  • (A) Apply a small amount of ammonia solution to neutralize acidity.
  • (V) Apply a small amount of vinegar solution to neutralize alkalinity of the stain.
  • If a stain does NOT RESPOND, some stains need special chemicals and procedures best handled by experts.
